SMWCX- A Reality! [General Discussion]

Friendly reminder: Space, resources, and anything of the like are not any worry. You can make your level and basically send it in without any qualms.

Here's a growing list of musical ideas.

SMWCX- The Beginning Thought

With SMWCP2 getting ever so close to it's completion, there has been boredom among the community in terms of projects. As such, we thought that it would be a cool idea to try leading a collab in the mario fangame engine SMBX. We're wondering how many people would be interested in such a project. We know that it's not the Lunar Magic that you're used to, but this could be a fun, learning experience for many of you guys. It'd just be a fun, different thing to try and do. We want to know a few things before we start, though.

The first, and most important, thing to know would be how many people are interested in the whole project. If you are, maybe you could shed some light on some other questions too.

Secondly, we want to know your ideas for what the theme/plot should be. It's good to get that decided before actually beginning work on the levels. I (NoelYoshi) myself have a few ideas, but of course we would love to put yours under consideration! A lot of you are extremely creative.

Before we get this thing going, another thing is we'd like to get the map/hub sorted out. As such, we'd like to know one thing; would you guys rather have an actual world map, or a hub level? Both end up doing well, and have their own perks. Just let us know how you feel about it.

After we figure this stuff out, we'll edit this thread to include information about claiming and submitting levels, along with whatever custom resources they may use. Something cool about SMBX is that there's no need to worry about claiming your resources. You may use as many custom graphics and as much custom music as you like; indulge yourself, but don't go too far. Remember what makes a good level.

Don't be afraid of SMBX. It might look hard, but it's not as hard to learn as it may seem.

Thank you for your time.

SMWCX- A Reality

We've gotten some healthy feedback and interest from those who have posted and from people on the Internet Relay Chat. We've decided to go ahead and give the project a start! If you have any questions, like usual, just feel free to talk to myself or eXcavator.

To kind of let you know what we have planned in terms of direction, here's the outline:

Current Step: Submission Round One

We're very happy to start the project up. Hopefully, over time, interest will increase and increase, and then we can get people involved. Anyway, have a great day! Check back for new posts or edits.
I'm assuming it was ASMBXT which inspired this?

Either way, I'd be interested in contributing a level and I'm sure you could get some others interested as well. I've played around with the SMBX editor and it's very versatile, not to mention you can use any song you want (which is great for music lovers like myself). It would be great to see some interest in this.
Yeah, the SMBX engine is one of the better ones I've used, surprisingly powerful. All it really needs is a palette editor. >_>

As Noel mentioned I'll be helping run this thing, so I'll be making levels too and stuff.
Even with a lack of users here who don't use SMBX, I think it's a pretty nice idea, I'm able to help if possible.

Actually, custom graphics can be made to substitute any existing graphical resource. You just need to make a new GIF for the sprite (using the original graphics) with the same filename, and modify the colors as you see fit.

I'd totally be interested, on the condition that either someone else makes any tileset I need for me (as in, I supply a tileset and someone makes the necessary files for SMBX to recognize it) or teaches me how to do so, 'cause I REALLY don't know how to do it.
<Adam> I feel like smwc is a prostitute now, because we put up a porn ad for money
WOW! This would be great! I got Super Mario Bros. X not too long ago. I beat The Invasion 2 and now I'm doing something with it. I've edited nothing but the music. I put custom music in almost every level. Most of the music is from the music section in SMWCentral. Some of the music was ripped from Super Mario World hacks, and a few more songs are original songs and are from elsewhere.

I'm puting up a walkthrough of The Invasion 2 with all of the custom music here.

I think I'm interested in this project and helping out, even though I might not be of much help.

EDIT: Well, I might be able to help with inserting music.

I am very much interested in starting messing with SMBX, though there are still several things about it that confuse me (for one, adding in new graphics, how does that work?).

So, a SMWCP for SMBX...a very neat concept indeed, and I'm quite interested. I'd have to get more familiar with SMBX first, but I'd definitely like to contribute.

I'm probably retired tbh
That would be cool. I have never used SMBX =P I tried downloading it once, but... I do not think I got the right one, seeing my computer freaked out when I downloaded it.

I would be interested in this as well. Naturally, however, I'll probably need to create a couple of levels with it as well (that, and get motivation to make levels (THAT, and make some normal SMW levels to show you guys my skill and see if I'm suitable to make a level)).

I'd also be interested in helping write up the plot and deciding the theme. So far, we've done the "lolcakemario" thing and we then did an industry and its impact on the environment theme, why not a theme of... death? I'm not sure, but once we decide the theme, I'd definitely like to write up the plot with others.

I've actually done that before, but it's kind of a pain in the ass and I am lazy. A built in palette editor would be better.
This actually sounds like a good idea. I'd be willing to partake in this (hey my first "Mario" contribution to the site).
I'd say finishing SMWCP2 first would be a better idea. Progress on it is only going to slow down even more if attention is being taken away from it.

Regardless, I'd be interested in this. I've never heard of SMBX, but if it's less limited than and as intuitive as Lunar Magic, I might make a few levels.
In SMBX, placing objects on top of other tiles will not cause cutoff, such as a Coin on a bush.

You can still change palettes of stuff in SMBX except it's known as recolouring in this game. You can do that through a drawing program such as Paint.NET.
Yeah, I'm all for this. SMBX has always felt easier to me than Lunar Magic, so I'll gladly join this. I'd think a hub level would be cool if we had it like SM64's very explorable castle, but it's fine if we do a OW. I need to start on a SMBX project of my own sometime...
I'd like to thank you all for the input so far.

Myself, I'm thinking that this project will become a reality for sure.

It's this kind of creativity I like to see. When plot discussion comes around, you should build on this more.

That's a really cool idea, I'll mention this to eX if he hasn't already seen it. A "Peach's Castle"-esque hub could be really inventive and interesting.

I'm sure we would be able to help you. eXcavator really knows SMBX well, so if you needed held of any kind, I'm sure he could assist you.

I can't lie when I say that this project did not make me more interested in creating the thread. I had, prior to ASMBXT however, had a thought of a community SMBX project. I just never decided to try and take it anywhere.

Thank you all for your replies. If anyone wants to help more people see the thread and give some valuable input, it would be appreicated.
If anyone has any questions/comments/concerns, keep them coming!

I was going to jump onto the SMBX engine when my hack wasn't working. Luckily is does work ^.^ anyyyyyyyyyway the possibilities with SMBX are pretty awesome and would open up a lot of ideas which sadly SMW can't do.
Ah, I love the growing interest in SMBX.

If this happens, count me in!~

I don't really like this idea :T.

But eh, looks like I'm alone on this.

I'd also be very interested in writing the plot. I've been writing the plot for DSotK, and it's a very fun process.

On the topic of death, I think we couldn't really do death in the Mushroom Kingdom without it getting overly Narmy. I would suggest something a little less heavy-handed.
