The 6th Annual SMW Central Level Design Contest [Discussions]

Link Thread Closed
I am not a judge but given how it was used as a bg in smw (with level mode 01 though) then I don't see why not.

Could be slightly difficult, but definitely not Kaizo. I've tried to not exceed 64 decimal screens.

I hope you realize joke entries have never been funny ever.

I was simply experimenting with something that isn't a normal long level. I hate long levels, so why not go with something else instead - how much of the level I can fit on the one screen without getting unfair. Well, platforming games level design (before Super Mario Bros. was released, that is) was looking like that. Why not make something like that the days when you can easily scroll the screen. I actually could make a standard level (see EPIC in 9th Special World Level contest), but I don't think it would have much chances here. And well, I don't expect high positions for this thing. It's rather difficult for one screen level, but definitely not Kaizo.

I'm sure this entry could be controversial (the standard is 0x2F screens, I guess ;-)). I just wanted it to be creative, but I guess it counts as joke level (depending on your definition - the rules aren't specific enough). This is level design contest.

If you really want to, disqualify this entry. I don't agree with that, but the decision is for judges.

i guess that if i have to explain it, i already have failed, but whatever

Here's a pic (if I'm breaking any rules it'd be nice to know now so I don't need to worry about it in the future):

I'm assuming the pipe corners are just made from pipe tiles through Map16 only, and that the gradient at the bottom is made by using three different palettes for the ground/dirt tiles, in which case it seems fine.

And would doing something like this (using palettes): be breaking the rules, I get the feeling it may be breaking rule 5e but I want to make sure (and concidering it wouldn't be used as an on/off switch, it's probably even more likely to be breaking it).

Yeah, that probably wouldn't be allowed, especially if you're not even using it as an on/off switch to begin with.

Can I use the castle rocks as a background? And yes, I'm aware of rule 5b.

You can use them as they were used in the original game, yes. That is, you can use them as a "background" in the FG layer but you can't actually put them in the BG layer. Not unless there's a precedent for the latter in the original game that I'm forgetting.

It's actually also used as a BG in the original game in some levels, like 007 and 020.
EDIT: I read it as the castle blocks BG somehow ?-?

No it's not.
It was only used in level 0E (Ludwing Castle) on layer 2 FG.

Also if you guys have trouble making level and staying in the allowed limit, you can use lunar magic 1.00. Since in LM 1.00 the option are very limited, you won't try to do something risky since it's not possible. #ab{:P}

Personally I don't have troubles with the rules because I'm used to do simple vanilla levels. My level will not be the greatest but at least I won't be disqualified. #ab{:P}

I'm looking through Morton's (7) and Roy's (20) Castle in Lunar Magic now, and I don't see a single instance of those rock tiles. Like yogui says, though, they are used on layer 2 in Ludwig's Castle (E).

So, you can't put them in the background layer.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see your edit.

Is it okay if I use the higher Map16 pages to make tiles from pre-existing graphics (for example, grass corners)?

What exactly do you mean? Could you clarify with screenshots?

Map16 manipulation in general is fine; just don't fundamentally change the basic nature of tiles and don't go cherry-picking obscure bits and pieces.

Well, I don't have a screenshot handy, but I can explain it somewhat better. I want to go to Map16 page 2 (0x200-0x2FF) and turn one of the unused tiles into upside-down grass corner tiles that behave like solid tiles.

Is this allowed?

Yeah, that sort of thing is fine.

AirMario's Entry

Well, it looks fairly decent, though there are just 2 tiny little errors you (might) need to fix.

It may be just me, but it's a little weird to touch the upside-down ledge edge from the right side.

Same thing as before, but on the left side. Again, it may be just me, though.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Judging by those two screenshots alone "looks fairly decent" is an overstatement.

I don't think so, because the entry is shorter, but at the same time decent.

I'm referring to the aesthetics of the screens.

^Oh, I was going to mention those, but forgot about it.

What i really hate are hacks that overuse the term "look, those patterns in the dirt are cool" i mean,if you really need to put deco on the grasslands, use bushes, small to big, tree's,not this:

I think that the idea of these are cool if you make something like a floating isle, mario has floating stuff,i know that it is to get a "wacky mario feeling",but hey, remeber the last time you saw a knot of dirt in the ground on level 1-1 of SMB?
Nobody will understand my pure hate for the redrawn tilesets.

A preview of my entry...

@Yan - The last two screenshots are probably my favorite. Mahogany...

A return to the fundamentals is always a good time. Let this be a new age of level design and jumping.

I'm making a forest castle, just for you.
Would requiring a death in order to reach the secret exit be a breach of rule 3b, even if an extra life is provided? In a similar manner, would requiring the player to not die in order to reach the secret exit be a breach of rule 3b? I would think that neither of them are, but in the case that they count as "obscure" ""manoeuvres"", would it still count if they were stated to be the case? Would requiring the player to spin-jump off an enemy to proceed qualify as an obscure manoeuvre, and would it have any impact on a level's "difficulty" rating?

Also, how is "difficulty" going to be rated? Will it be based on how consistent the difficulty is / how smooth the progression is, and will the level being "too easy" or "too hard" as a whole impact the difficulty score as a whole? "Too hard" assuming the level isn't disqualified, just challenging within a reasonable extreme--the question mainly being if any of the judges would consider there being a gap between what is reasonably challenging and disqualifiable. Would a level with high difficulty that is counteracted by its relatively short length have a better difficulty rating that if it was the same length as a far easier level, or would it be considered just both too hard and too short?

Feel free not to actually answer any of the judging related questions if you don't want to.
May we meet again outside the battlefield.
