I'm sure all (or most of us) know a lot of them pokemon's names. But what are they BASED ON? Some of them are very obvious, some not really. So why not build a cool list of names and their origin? I've already filled in a bunch I can think of myself, but it will need a lot of help! Give corrections if I'm wrong or post for stuff to add. Also contains some other minor stuff at the bottom.

For the record, Bulbapedia has (sometimes speculative) name origins for most if not all Pokémon.
Rayquaza is an ancient dragon based on Japanese mythology
Shaymin is literally a Hedge hog
Giratina is basically a dead dragon sent to the ghost world(or in this case, the reverse world), and therefore kinda explains why it's type is Ghost and Dragon, and when it first appeared as a "shadow" in Pokemon platinum.
Not all the Pokemon names are based on something, but if you see them it would make more since on what they could be(like Shaymin, it's name doesn't resemble anything but the look of it is a hedgehog).
Edit: Ninja'd.. =(

Aha. I knew pikachu was something wapanese but i forgot what. Added. I can't believe I forgot about the existance of sparrows. Poli = Pole... possible but meh. I have never heard of a Dugong, but okay. Added. Muck ok. Cloyster could be something like Clamp. or just Clam. Can agree with Kangaroo on Kangaskhan. Tauros dur. Jinx is pretty obvious Ditto as well Aerodactyl is good too Originally posted by RaindropDry Caterpie probably came from Caterpillar, with a Pie. Pie... What. Caterpiller is agreed. Maybe "Petal" + "Lil" as in little. Also Victini is definitely partially based on victory Abomasnow... that doesn't sound unlikely either. Magikarp and Gyarados: Both are based off of Chinese mythology where if fish can swim up a waterfall and leap over the dragon's gate, they transform into dragons or something.
Slowpoke: Most likely based off of little kid insults if you can't run fast.
Meganium: First part seems likely, second part is most likely based off of any plant of the American genus Helenium (link is put there to prove it is a real word even though computer tells me it isn't).
Gengar: I can guess where the first part comes from: genocide. Hey, Gengar could've died from violent acts as it is a ghost.
Gastly: Is probably based on the word Ghastly, referring to something terribly horrible to the senses.
Eevee: Most likely not it, but could be based from even, as it has even chances of evolving into any of it's evolutions (eeveelutions?).
Chansey: Guessing here first part is chance. A chance of happiness!
Clefairy and Clefable: Perhaps the first part is clean? I have no idea, but they aren't exactly fighters, so that would make them rather clean...(okay this is a shit one).
Crobat: It has the shape of a cross and is a bat.
Elekid: Electricity and kid.
Magby: Magma and baby.
Mareep: Last part suggests a sheep. Thought you would've gotten that Pat.
That's all I can remember so far. Lemme go fish in my head for more and I'll let you know.
EDIT: Got one more for now.
Raichu: Rai is a style of Algerian popular music played on an electric guitar. Notice the word electric.
Slowpoke: Most likely based off of little kid insults if you can't run fast.

I know the Unova towns are named after cloud terminology, ex. Nimbasa (Nimbus), Straiton (stratus), Accumula (culumus). Sinnoh seems to be based on general environment, Pastoria (pasture), Canalave (canal, cave), Sunnyshore. And the Hoenn regions seem to base their town names off of trees and flowers, but instead of using actual tree names, they start to take parts of it and combine them with other words to make a town name.
In addition, here's some that I have:
Rhyhorn - Rhino + Horn
Steelix - Sokobansolver already explained that Onix is a deriviate of Onyx rock. Steelix is basically Steel Onix.
Dusclops - Dusk + Cyclops
Chatot - Chat + Parrot
Mantyke - Manta + Tyke (As in baby manta)
Snivy - Snake +Ivy
Servine - Serpent + Vine, you should be able to figure out Serperior at this point.
Tepig - Tepid + Pig, Tepid means lukewarm.
Cryogonal - If I'm correct, Cryogenic (Acronym for cold) + polygonal
Bisharp - Bishop (Like the chess piece) + Sharp
Vullaby - Vulture + Baby
I no longer have interest in SMW Hacking as I did when I first started several years ago.
The others I struggled to see otherwise, but this:
Having looked at it now, I see honeycomb and bee.

Deoxys - from deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
Maybe I'll add more later.

Eevee is a shortened version of evolution iirc. You know, lots of evolutions.
Wow, can't believe I missed these.
Wobbuffet: First part most likely refers to wobble or a bobble head.
Wynaut: Why not?
Now the ones that I just remembered.
Tyranitar: Tyrant for the first.
Tympole: Last part is tadpole.
Swoobat: Swoop+Bat
Sunflora: Sun+flora, which is the plant life in a particular region or time.
Quagsire: Quag refers to a marshy place, as you usually find Quagsire near water or in a marsh, do you not?
Sneasel: Sneaky+?
Dustox: Dust+?
Aggron: Aggressive+Iron
Wailmer and Wailord: Whale just spelled differently.
Walrein: Walrus+?
Groudon: Ground+?
Metang and Metagross: Metal+?. Metang's last part could be a reference to a noise when metal collides with another object.
Weavile: ?+Vile
Arceus: ?+Ceus, the staff carried by Mercury in ancient mythology. Mercury was a messenger of the gods.
Haha, never in my life did I ever think I'd be looking this deep into Pokemon.

Haha, never in my life did I ever think I'd be looking this deep into Pokemon.
I'm going to be a complete Pokemon nerd and fill in the first 151 Pokemon ?'s:
* Caterpie is most likely just a corruption of caterpiller, not a mix.
* Metapod is a mix of metamorphosis and pod.
* Weedle is a combination of worm and needle, not weed. XD
* Kakuna is just a corruption of cacoon.
* Pidgeot is a combination of pigeon and jet. Not sure about Pidgey and Pigeotto, though Pidgey just seems just like a normal corruption of pigeon.
* Radicate, I was never really sure of, but I assume it's rat and eradicate or something.
* The origins for Pikachu and Raichu are wrong. Pikachu comes from pikapika (Japanese onomatopoeia for sparkle) and chuchu (Jap. onomatopoeia for squeaking), and Raichu comes from rai (Jap. for thunder) and chuchu again. Pichu probably comes from the same origin as Pikachu. For the record, mouse is nezumi, hence "nezumiman".
* Nidoran comes from nido ("two degrees", in reference to it's male and female evolutionary split) and ran ("orchid", in reference to it's blue or purple color), if I recall. It's name in the Japanese version is also Nidoran, making this more likely to be correct. Same can be applied to the rest of the Nido-'s.
* Clefairy and Clefable come from fairy/fable and clef.
* Ninetales is a combination of nine and tales, obviously, as well as a reference to the Japanese myth (pretty sure the tales part points it out).
* Jigglypuff is from jiggly and puff, obviously.
* Wigglytuff comes from wiggly and tough (tuff).
* Zubat is another Japanese one, coming from bat and zubatto (onomatopoeia for sawing).
* Golbat comes from ghoul and bat, though I've heard some people say it's actually gold and bat.
* Paras and Parasect are correct as far as I know.
* Venonat comes from venom and gnat.
* Diglett comes from dig and -let (suffix that makes an object smaller).
* Golduck does come from gold and duck, I guess since psychic stuff is usually represented by gold in the series.
* Mankey is right, I'm pretty sure.
* Growlithe comes from growl and lithe.
* Arcanine does come from arcane and canine.
* Poliwag, Poliwhirl, and Poliwrath come from what you have, and polliwog.
* Victreebell comes from victory, tree, and bell.
* Graveler comes from gravel and traveler.
* I always thought Ponyta was a shortened ponytail, but it could just be a corruption of pony.
* Slowpoke refers to the insult.
* Magnemite is either a corrupted magnet or a combination of magnet and stalagmite, though that doesn't make much sense.
* Magneton is in reference to the measurement magneton, I think.
* Grimer is a corruption of grime.
* Shellder is a combination of shell and shelter.
* Haunter is either just a corruption of haunt or a mix of haunt and hunter.
* Gengar comes from doppelganger. "genocide" lol
* Hypno does come from hypnosis.
* Kingler is either from king or angler, or king and fiddler (two types of crab).
* Electrode comes from electric and node.
* Exeggcute either comes from execute and egg. Exeggutor is the same deal with executor instead.
* Marowak comes from marrow and whack.
* Hitmonlee comes from hit, monster and Lee. Hitmonchan is the same with Chan instead.
* Weezing's is given correctly, though it's "wheezing".
* Rhyhorn is rhinoceros and horn. Rhydon is rhinoceros and don.
* Chansey is just a corruption of chance/chancy (in reference to it's rarity).
* Tangela comes from tangle and Medusa.
* Kangaskhan comes from kangaroo and Genghis Khan.
* Goldeen comes from goldfish and queen.
* Staryu and Starmie either come from "Star You" and "Star Me" or yu ("fish" in Chinese) and mi ("gem" in Japanese).
* Scyther just comes from scythe.
* Magmar is either a corruption of magma or a combination of magma and mar.
* Pinsir is a corrpution of pincer.
* Gyarados is a Japanese one, with either gyakusatsu (massacre) or gyakkyo (hardship).
* Lapras is a corruption of laplace.
* Eevee comes from E.V., short for evolution.
* Vaporeon comes from vapor and eon. The eon goes for all the other Eevee evolutions, too.
* Omanyte is a corruption of ammonite. Omastar is the same, but combined with the word star.
* Kabuto and Kabutops both stem from the Japanese kabutogani (horseshoe crab) and kabuto (helmet).
* Dratini comes from dragon and tiny (sometimes pronounced like "teenee").
* Dragonair comes from dragon and air.
* Dragonite is dragon and knight.
* Mew either comes from mew (cat sound), mutant, or myo (Japanese for unusual).
And that's all 151 original Pokemon. I didn't bother checking all the ones you already had, so I may have missed a few.
You can blame my Pokemon-obsessed elementary school for having most of these memorized ten years later. I had to use Google for the Japanese fact checking, though.
I think I've wasted enough time typing all this up, so you guys can have the remaining ~500 to yourselves.

To be specific, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan are referencing Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in particular.
