Super Mario World: Old Rumors and Secrets

Through the video gaming age, various rumors and supposed secrets are passed on between players.

Super Mario World (and SMA2, to an extent) is no exception.

This is a thread that is meant to collect and preserve such rumors.

So, I ask you, SMWC;

What are some of the more ridiculous and crazy rumors and hoaxes you've heard or seen in your earlier days regarding Super Mario World?

Edit: You are also more than welcome to find rumors floating on the web and post them here as well.
Back when I was a kid, my dad would tell me about this game and we even played it a fair bit in the co-op mode. (he mostly did the hard levels since I was like 5) I remember him telling me about a world he had found in the game that he could never remember how he got there with level with names like "Tubular" so I assume he meant the special world.
He was dead set on the fact that he had gotten there from the vanilla secret fortress (ironically the one you have in the picture) and that Mario would climb up the waterfall to get there. I swear I tried to get into ever single stone brick in that fortress to try and find it even causing quite a few "time over" screens. Before I ever found out about Lunar Magic and SMW hacking I was under the impression that there was a hidden world in SMW that I had just never found.

Sadly, this was not the case but a neat idea I think to hide a world up that water fall!
As a kid I would always fantasize about the two islands off of Chocolate Island 1. A friend of mine had me convinced that there were supposed to be two unlockable levels on those islands, saying that his father had managed to find the secret exit. This was before my knowledge of the whole red level signifying having two exits thing so I furiously checked every pipe and pitfall to see if something came up. Of course nothing happened, which made me really confused.

It was only until I picked up the SMA2 version of Super Mario World (around 3 years later) that I learned the differences between level colours. Needless to say, I was pretty shocked.

Back in 2006 when SMW hacking wasn't nearly as popular or well known, I was viewing YouTube videos consistently for the first time and I was a lurker. I found this hoax SMW video where they found this secret level in the Star World submap. There was this unexplored bit below the bottom of Star World 1 that he got to by entering a small bit of cutoff in the corner, and that led to a large room with two vines above lava. That was where the keyhole was. It opened up a level on the moon part of the Star World and a path to it. The level's name was 'Secret (Yoshi Footprint)'. The level consisted of a repeated hill tiled BG, Mario started out invisible for a few seconds, and there were glitched Bob-Ombs, falling spikes, and Rip Van Fish. The level was full of cut-off and used the forest sprite tileset. The video was uploaded by someone named Extremecool and the description said 'I have found a new level. A secret one.' The audio playing in the video was 'Bad Touch' by the Bloodhound Gang. I used to wonder if it was an actual dummied out level in SMW, but couldn't find any info on it.
I can't find the video anymore.

I seem to recall that, as a kid, someone tried to convince me that the different OW palettes (actually unlocked by completing the Special World) was unlocked by walking around the Chocolate Island 2 loop on the overworld enough times.
I always disliked rumors, because most of the time these things are false, yet their directions are so specific. This must mean that some schmuck deliberately made up something they knew was completely false, for what reason? Just to be an idiot.

A long time ago (around elementary school), my brother would tell me that his best friend's friend/cousin/i forgot had a Super Mario World where the island with the Star Road below Soda Lake would expand into a full island named Ranaban Island (a play on banana). The island was home to giant, red Rexes, among other things. I think he also said it was a red forest. He also told me that this friend/cousin discovered alot of other stuff, and that he was pretty pro at games too. (for example: being able to do a giant fireball with Mario in Super Smash Bros Melee).

Wasn't until years later (when I started SMW hacking) that I realize the dude was a SMW hacker (and probably ASMer, because giant red Rex). And his parents probably Nintendo devs, since the giant fireball is clearly referring to Mario's Final Smash in Brawl before it was announced.

never met him
When I was little, I watched my brother play Super Mario World. When he got to the Special World and I saw that the stars at the bottom were levels, I then proceeded into the belief that EVERY SINGLE STAR in the word SPECIAL was a level.

It wasn't really a rumor, but yeah.
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.
Although not necessarily a rumour, I do remember seeing lots of videos about:
1) "Secret" levels in SMW. A favourite of theirs seems to be that island above Top Secret Area.
2) A new powerup on SMW. I remember a laser suit powerup.

To be honest though, I have never liked rumours really as they always end up being false. And also that sometimes the rumours were actually kinda cool. : P

I remember seeing a video way back that had both of those things. If I recall you had to go through an invisible door (or pipe? can't remember) in Top Secret Area and it'd unlock a level on the island where everything was purple and you'd get the laser suit.

I've always loved rumors about popular video games. Just the imagination that results from them is great, and a successful hoax is always fun to watch.
Some kid once told me Super Mario World had a secret level called Life Land. According to him, you needed a special SNES controller with only six buttons to input a code to unlock the level. The level was apparently long and hard and you had an hour time limit. He mentioned there were two paths you could take through the level, one with a red boss door at the end, and one with a green boss door at the other end. The boss used machine guns and if you beat it, a bunch of silver coins would fall from the sky. When I asked him where the level was on the map screen, he said that you just saw the entire map when you're at the level.
The island and the laser suit got me pretty badly back in 2007. I was probably around eight years old when I first saw the video, and I tried so many different things in an attempt to P-balloon out of nowhere and somehow use the question blocks as a pipe in Top Secret Area. I don't know how many hours I spent on it.
Anyone remember the Lazer Suit video?

EDIT: Damn, didn't read the thread. There was a short video about an alternate exit on Choclate Island 1 that went to another island.
I remember reading about a rumor stating that there was a secret exit in the Sunken Ghost Ship. I don't remember where exactly I found it. It may have even been an April Fools joke, like the Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee thing.

Coincidentally enough, that video is the reason of me finding SMW hacking.

I also remember the laser suit which made use of the island above the top secret area.
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)
I recall the Lazy Suit rumor, though I can't find the video anymore. Here is another one I watched when I was around 10, and IIRC motivated me even more to find a way to edit SMW (I knew it was a fake, because I tried it out on SMW but the path didn't exist, and I assumed the level is much more poorly made that Nintendo would ever do it).
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I don't know any rumours but I was always convinced the 3UP Moon was some crazy powerup when I first seen it. I was sad when it was only lives :(

I was doing the same thing too.

When I was a kid, my older brother told me there was a secret exit in the valley fortress which connected it with Lemmy's castle; so I started looking for it until he told me there was no such thing.

Also I watched this over three years ago, and I actually thought it was true and was about to try it out until I saw all the comments said it was fake. Of course, I didn't know about Lunar Magic back then, so I couldn't know it was a hack.
