Interesting...

My Italian is a little rusty, but I think words that end in o are masculine and words that end in i are feminine. So if you're going for a female character, I'd find a word that ends in i.

Eroico is a good name.

Eroici? I'm not sure yet. It will take a few more days to settle on everything.

How about just an icon of a golden needle? Or maybe, keeping with the Mario theme, a cactus flower (There's all kinds of varieties, but the bright yellow ones you see in Arizona come to mind).

Nice ideas, but I think that they will gain a flower after becoming super just for the sake of detail.

As for growing, there's a fruit-like thing called a Peruvian Apple that a certain kind of cactus produces, but it just looks like a potato.

I was thinking of using some kind of root instead of the standard mushroom.

I'm going to use them later.

I am going to be using the straight fireball patch, since it would look better if the needles shot straight forward toward their target.

Actually, words that end in i are plural and words that end in a are feminine. (I'm not sure though).

Just back here to browse a bit.
Er...I have to admit, the sudden switch to a cactus-based hero strikes me as a little...well, insane. Don't get me wrong; I love cactuses. Were you to develop a seperate, whimsy-filled hack called "The Adventures of Cesare the Cactus" centering around the cactus qua cactus, and drawing on all of the crazy hijinks that a cactus is wont to encounter in its daily comings and goings, I'd support it in a heartbeat. But in the context of Dark Horizon as hithero presented in this thread, a cactus in the lead role seems a very bizarre, shoehorned-in element.

And then of course there are the difficulties arising from a cactus's physical makeup, which is quite different from that of Mario, and suited to decidedly different activities. Cactuses are notoriously poor jumpers, being, on the balance, somewhat lacking in the limb department. They're completely incapable of climbing vines. Swimming is right out. They can't carry objects with them (not koopa shells or spring boards, at least), nor kick them, and they're ill-suited to wearing capes (especially of the sort to be swung as a weapon), as such garments have a tendency to stick to their thorns, which inhibits movement and is extremely uncomfortable besides. Sure, a cactus-themed hack (or "hacktus", if you will) could certainly be done, but it would require a complete rethinking of how the game might be played. The Mario-to-cactus transition is a formidable task indeed, not to be taken up lightly, and not a thing that will easily submit to being thrust upon a work already in progress.

In the end, though, it is your hack, and if you think you can make it work, by all means, go for it.
The cactus was a joke.

He fell for it.

._.
Your layout has been removed.

My hack so far hasn't been one of those serious hacks. It's been very colorful and Kirby-like. (but only I could know, since I've been producing the levels all of this time) The name can surely change to something less dark.

The Power-ups:

• Apalago Root (Mushroom)
I came up with the name in a few seconds, so shoot me. As you would suspect, it causes Eroico to grow bigger.

• Phoenix Egg (Fire Flower)
Grants Eroico the power to shoot golden needles.

• Oro Feather (Starman)
Makes Eroico invincible in a shield of golden light for a short time.
in italian, "oro" means gold.

• Aria Medallion (Cape)
Causes wings to sprout from Eroico, granting him/her the power to glide slowly over danger.
in italian, "aira" means air.

It's funny, oro also means gold in Spanish.
Anyway, I like your name choices, especially Apalago root.

Oro Feather sounds a little awkward, though... how about Orona Feather instead?

This is the funniest post of all time even if it wasn't meant to be. Even though I had an idea for a character I think I'm gonna make him a cactus too, just because.

A cactus named Awesome

I'm gonna go make a hacktus right now.
Seriously, your last hack was great, i'm sure this will be even better. I'm all for any non-mario characters, especially original ones. This hack loos quite good.

Well, it surely wasn't meant in deadly earnest, even if it's (sort of) trying to advance a legitimate point.

I have nothing against any hacktuses that various folks may now be tempted to attempt. I think it's just important that the hack be based around the character as such. Perhaps I've just seem too many inept hacks in which the author would simply stick a two-tiered pokey in Mario's place, and have it do such decidedly un-cactusy things as spin jump, wear a cape, ride on Yoshi (ouch) and so forth. If one wants to use a character other than Mario (especially one so different as a cactus), it's worth considering how this character might behave differently from Mario (e.g. what can Mario do that this character can't, and what can this character do that Mario can't), and designing various puzzles and obstacles according to these differences.

But again, if you've got some good ideas for how a cactus hero might handle, and some interesting level ideas that draw on this, by all means, start hacking that hacktus.

I'm not sure about this. I might bring back Mario but keep the new power-ups and enemies, or just go with the cactus. I need to take a break from this...

lol, sorry man, it's just I used to go to a board where people would be deadly earnest about stuff like that and it's like argh.

but in any case

I've made up my mind, and the final verdict of who will be the main character has been decided. Mario will stay, but the cactus might make an appearance in separate, more cartoony graphics hack. The reason for this is simple, my hack is more orientated to a more serious genre. A cactus would just not cut it in the character department, and I AM hacking Super Mario World: Starring Mario.

My hack will be on a short hiatus until I get things organized and back under control again. As you may guess, that's probably when I receive my new computer with more technical capabilities.
i.e. Not crashing.

Do not fear about this hack getting deleted. It's stored on two separate computers, as well as my email account. The only true way for my hack to diminish, is if both my computers break for no apparent reason, Google goes bankrupt, and I randomly explode all at the same exact time.

See you again soon.

Aha. Here is some new custom cave graphics based off of the new kirby games and NSMB.

It's not snow, it's crystal dust. Note the green crystals on the left. Also, I'm a bit unhappy with the background itself, but it's still way better then some of my other works.

I like how the background walls turned out, but some sprites appear behind them, like that mushroom.

Here is a short column supporting the higher rock.

Some sort of staircase formation. The corners are a little glitched around the background walls, though. That will be fixed.

At this elevation, you can see an opening out of the cave. Looking familiar yet?

Now let's go under here and see what's over there...

Oh shi-

Comments/criticism is appreciated.

You should make the blocks, pipe and vine a bit darker.
I honestly want to rip those cave graphics from your screenshots and right into my hack, that's how good they are.

sweet GFX dude, you're definitely one to watch
Those are definetly some sexy cave graphics! XD

Wow, wonderful graphics! The crystals of the floor makes me remember of the cave levels of Yoshi's Island DS. The background looks very professional! I definitely enjoyed these new graphics. However, I didn't like Mario's eyes, I reckon it would be better if you add white covering his pupil. Sorry, I always have something to spoil everything, maybe is only me, though.
