Mario vs. The Economy

Standard

In my opinion it's a bit on the hard side, if you watch the videos, you'll see me die a couple times. It is perfectly beatable without save states.

Edit: YES PAGE 2
that is what I mean :D
I'm really looking forward to play it :)
Collect the coins to boost the economy? Has the Mushroom King been spending too much lately? *big grin*

Anyway, it is a bit too flat, but otherwise decent. Sounds like the later levels will be harder than in a normal hack since you need to get every single coin. #w{>=)}

any updates?
Things are actually going a bit slower. I have done most of an underwater level, and I still have a video to do for the desert level.

I also have a level for TCCR, your hack to work on and a couple other timewasting hacks that I do occasionally. Don't worry though, it's not dead.
So Mario has to collect all the coins to get his economy running, hehe, cool spinoff.

well, the thing about this gimmick is that its kinda old, but not in a bad way. To keep this gimmick all the way trough the hack, your level design has to be interesting, not just place a bunch of coins in obvious places. And it seems like you got some good coin spots acording to the pic you've shown, but the levels seem kinda boring and uninspired. Try to use some custom sprites and exgfx to boost you level design.

that OW seems kinda flat, make the decorations and paths look more random placed if you get what I mean. Also, the fade between snow, desert and grass looks horrible, its easy to smoothen this with exgfx.

Thanks, I find it pretty interesting.

Mind naming some other hacks that use this?

Level design is going to be much different from your usual Mario game. Watch the videos to see how they really play out.

This hack is vanilla in the sense that I don't care about ExGFX (not that they'll improve the level) and have never tried to insert sprites. I'm trying to get the original SMW to feel comfortable around the concept.

See previous posts. It's a land. Not a group of islands. A land.

Ah yes, you're the first person to mention this. Could you explain to me how to do this? I had no idea how to.
Novel concept but I think the design in a few levels (like the ice plains) is a bit plain - I'd recommend putting down some background things like bushes.

Uhrix never said to make it islands, he simply mentioned adding more decorations.

Oh, just so you know how annoying this is;

Mario vs. the economy?#smw{o_O?}

Where did you get this idea?
End of this message.

I'm not actually sure. It might have something to do with the current economy of the U.S., maybe sort of a lampshade on this fact. It has eventually evolved into something more. If I ever bother to learn Spritetool, I'll put in some depressing cutscenes I made. The game is almost suppose to be a deconstruction of Mario.

What I'm also thinking of doing is just making a quality game and not caring about the story.

And since I'm here, I might as well give an update. I'm currently working on a water level that is going a bit roughly. I'm sort of disillusioned with the idea that I have to show off my hack while it's in Alpha, so updates will major and few and far between. Anybody who reads this, give all the criticism you want. I would love to hear some. I will keep watch on this thread, just to give people answers.

Also, by this point I really don't care about the OW. I've spent enough time and effort on it, and I really care more about the levels. If something absolutely drastic pops into your mind, go ahead and tell me, otherwise I don't particularly care.

e: Oh yes, and I would love a quick tutorial on how to smooth out biome changes with ExGFX. If anyone could explain this to me, I'll be sure to include your name in the credits.
Yawn. The hack has been revamped. I don't really care about criticsm anymore, though any more comments will be appreciated. I've scrapped all of the levels I hated, took out the OW entirely, and made constant cutscenes. Bleh.

Level 1 remains the same. No more seperate world, however.
The Ghost House is being converted into a spooky grassland level.
The Ice Level remains the same (though most likely pushed ahead some in the listing).
I'm not sure about the desert level, though I'll most likely scrap it, this hack should be all grassland and forest.
Mushroom level = Dead
Unshown Castle Level = Dead
Half finished water level = Dead

Welp, I should put a demo up here whenever I feel like it.
I told you there would be a demo.

Five levels.
1 - Intro grassland level
2 - Creepy grassland level
3 - NEW! Pipe level
4 - Ice grassland level
5 - NEW! Forest level

Give lots of criticism and comments.
That really sucked. Ugh. This is why you shouldn't throw together a demo right before bed.

Anyway, the demo has been fixed (at least 6 times, with ruthless testing) so feel free to actually play to Level 5. Level 6 is on the way, will probably have it done by tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get out another demo before my creative binge is over.

Criticism and comments, please. I would really love some.
i will try the demo today after i come from school around 19 or 20
I'm gonna try this tomorrow :D
Played first 3 levels and I like it! I like how the hack looks so far, gain coins to complete a level, and in vanilla like style!

If you're having trouble on number 4, do this:

1. Go left.
2. Get all coins. (explore, you have no time limit)
3. Go right.
4. Just play like a normal level, but get all of the coins.
5. While getting the last two coins, try to fall left. You might die if you fall off <- UNTESTED

Of course, you might not be having trouble...

Anyway, glad to see some support!
I will explore! Thanks for that tip I will start beating level 4 now!

How many levels and how do you plan to end the hack (ending and so how to get). When it's finished of course!

Enough talk, from what I have seen in begining level 4 must be an ice themed.

I support this hack, COMPLETE IT!

Remove asterisks and presto! (copied from first post)

I'm thinking 20 levels for the full product, with a demo every 5 levels. Level 6 might be finished today. Don't worry, I fully intend to complete it.
