Weekly Music Writing Activity!

Link Thread Closed
Hello! I'm happy to announce that several music people and I have devised a fun music-writing activity that will be held each week.

So, every week on a preset day (probably a Friday) and time, anyone interested will have one hour to write a piece of music (read: write/compose, not port) based on a theme we have chosen for us. The theme is chosen five minutes prior to the hour starting, so there's no real way anyone can cheat.

Themes will range from environmental (grass, jungle, sky), to time signatures, to even something like writing a song for a specific video-game character.

Note that this is an ACTIVITY, not a competition! No songs are graded, and there are no judges (although participants comment on each others' songs and point out positives and negatives). This is just a fun challenge people can participate in whenever they want and as often as they choose.

We'll make sure everyone has a chance to know what time the activity will take place. Some time before that time (an hour before at the most is preferred), anyone interested should join #chocolate, our IRC channel, just to let everyone else know that they will be participating. It is advised that you idle on the channel during the allotted hour in which you are writing your song. If you don't use the IRC but still want to participate, you can send me a PM to let me know, and I'll pass that information on to everyone else.

That's all for now. More details will be provided a day or so before the next time we hold the activity.

Cheers! And feel free to use this thread for comments/discussion/questions!
Where exactly do you announce the time it's held? I'd be interested in this, and I'm a bit miffed to have already missed the first one :/

Except that we have no real way of knowing that you followed the rules. I mean, we never really have a way of knowing at all, but it's easier if everyone remains in constant contact leading right up to, and following right after, the specified hour. If you can't join the IRC, though, send a PM or (if you must) put your song here.

@AxemJinx: I'll put an announcement in this thread.

Don't feel miffed - this really just started as a little thing between a couple of us, and it was suggested that we invite a few others to join in as well. It's not competitive, and merely for fun. Personally, I find it a great way to "recover" after a long week of school. Spending an hour on a fun task like composing is a great way to let off some steam and such.

As for the time it is held .. it would be cool if we could keep it constant. I think most of us are free Friday nights around 10 PM (or at least, the original group was), so keeping it static like that every week might work.
Oh, I didn't really mean it that way- I'd just like to participate, is all (:

Big Apple, 3AM Friday, 10PM (or thereabouts) sounds fine to me. If there's an hour I can spend on something like this, it would probably be around then.

Gonna start this in about an hour on IRC, so come on in @ whoever is interested this week.

EDIT: Sorry, make that two. 11 PM EST.
We'll be meeting tomorrow night at 11 PM EST again, so if anyone else wants to join in besides the usual crowd, please do so. We don't care how good or bad you are at composing - it's merely a creative exercise for fun.

EDIT: ..and I actually couldn't make it since I was out of the house, but apparently a few people made one. I'd love to get them posted.

TrapFanatic's song
AxemJinx's song
Edit: The ninja protection! It does nothing!

Edit 2: *Looks below* Yes, this post has a purpose now!

Thursdays should be fine for me, too. I hope I remember ^_^;

...Oh, the theme was creating a song for a Nintendo character that was never playable in official games. TrapFanatic chose the laser-wielding overprotective shopkeeper in Zelda: Link's Awakening; I chose Thwomp.

Dang, ninja'ed.

I think we're actually going to do the next one on Thursday at 10:30 PM EST. I talked with a few of the others involved and we found that Friday nights are sort of difficult for us. It seems like most of the people who participate are older than the average age (that is, 17-23), so I don't see ending at 11:30 EST as being a major issue. Of course, participation is entirely optional and for fun, so it's no big deal if you want to skip a week.

(if anyone has a problem with this, let me know.)

(American) Thanksgiving night just before Black Friday? Sounds like fun!
I would have participated if it weren't for the fact I was busy on Thursday... And that I'm not allowed to stay on my computer past 10:00 on Thursdays. It isn't good for me to be staying up close to midnight when I have to get up at 5:30 the next morning.

I missed this thread seeing it was on Thursdays, so this time it was my own fault, but Sunday-Thursday will never work for me unless it's held at 9:00pm EST at the very latest.

Since there's a majority that works best with the current time, there's no reason it should be changed for just me, but I'm a bit disappointed that it's placed at a horrible time slot for me.
Actually, I was thinking it might be better to alternate between Thursday and Friday nights so everyone could be accommodated. I know personally that I'm not always free on Friday nights, and certain Thursdays I'll be working.

I'll set next week's on Friday at 10:30 PM EST then. I don't think that will be an issue for anyone.
This is a second time I've missed one of these due to forgetting about it until it was too late...maybe it would be good to have some sort of reminder?

In any case, I decided to compose something anyway, if anyone is interested. Yes, I know that the end sounds like crap, but I didn't have time to fix the octave errors.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
Were we planning on meeting today/tomorrow, or is everyone busy with end-of-semester shenanigans this week?

I'm going to assume that people are busy (I guarantee S.N.N. is, and I would like to take tonight to rest and tomorrow to study for my Religion exam, so I'll be out, too). If you want to take the reins and find participants and a theme, you are more than welcome to--it isn't like S.N.N. or I have sole jurisdiction.
