Synthersizer to the Computer; Midi Synth or a Real Synth?

Okay this might be the wrong section to post this on, but I thought it would fit more well here than in the "Art" oHne.
Correct me if I'm wrong and feel free to move this to its proper section.

Anyways, so I saw this video on Youtube and was absolutly amazed of the possibilites with the synthesizer.
I would like to connect mine to the computer so that I can use it as a midi-input-thingy so that the notes I play on the synthesizer will come out in Fruity Loops Studio and the samples I have there (Like in the video?) Mainly because I thought it was an awesome experience and would help me with my creativity and motivation when it comes to composing (I'm a pianist and almost only plays on the piano at the moment).

So I went to the local music store and asked for whatever kind of wire I need to connect my synthesizer to my computer in this fashion.
Appearently I need this one, but it was quite expensive. I asked if this wire goes with newer versions of synthesizers (as I will probably buy a new one that is wider and more like an actual piano), but he told me that most synthesizers used for that kind of purpose these days are Midi Synthesizers, those whos only purpose is to be connected to the computer, and can not be played as an actual instrument without it. Thus, I hesitated.

Now you might wonder (Why? The wire must be a wiser purchase than an entirely new synthesizer just for that sole purpose?) Well, my synthesizer is pretty short, much shorter than the actual piano that I play. As I mentioned, I'm a pianist, and I want to use this connect-to-computer feature so that I can play my piano songs with cooler samples etc., not to make some-basic-melody-for-radio-mix-song.

What I mean is, I want a bigger synthesizer, one that resembles a piano as much as possible. Sooner or later I will move out from home and to a campus appartement, and I wont be able to bring my giant piano with me. Since I always keep my laptop nearby (at least always near the synthesizer when I decide to use it), would it be wiser to buy a piano-wide Midi synthesizer, or a Real one at the same length? By buying a Midi Synthesizer I wont need to buy that expensive wire (the only ones he had were pretty expensive) and only use an USB wire, but it must always be connected to the computer to be able to work (you can't play it as an actual synth, other than a tool for music programs like Fruity Loops).

The synth-to-computer feature is not essential for my music composing, as I'm experienced enough with placing out note by note in fruity loops with the mouse. It was more of a cool feature to help awaken motivation and creativity.

What do you guys suggest? Any remarkable benefits / disadvantages with one another?
What would I benefit the most of?
