Welcome, plumbers and rainbow pastries, to SMWC Idol 3, the beloved[citation needed] MMOMPG of SMW Central. If you're expecting a rerun of last year, well, I got some bad news, kid. Let me illustrate for you:

divisions

The number slot you get is determined by your placement in the preliminary round, and it can make or break you. The better you do in the preliminary, the better your chances are of not getting crushed early on. First and second places in both divisions are going to skip over round 1, not only giving them a break, but a decent advantage. If you lost round 3, you compete for the bronze against the other person who lost round 3.

Your division is also determined by how well you do in the preliminary - every other person fits the same division, e.g. without ties, odds get North and evens get South... therefore, if you're in 2nd, you get first seed in South. If a tie for 12th happens, we'll quickly rejudge those entries, but for other ties this round, I'll just go in alphabetical order.

Your mission, if you wish to get your glorious name in one of those pretty slots, is simply to make a port. I don't care if it's Green Greens from Kirby's Dreamland or Echoes by Pink Floyd. The only restrictions this round would be the use of samples. Don't do it. You also aren't allowed to compose your entry; it has to be a port. Accessible, eh? The judges are Atma, Supertails, and myself.

The deadline for getting your submissions in is THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 23:59 EST, on which day we must have your songs and shall decide which participants are qualified to move onto the next rounds. Post your entries in this thread and make a new post if you update your submission so it's accounted for. All judges should have their scores in NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 7:30 EST to me and I'll split everyone into brackets.

Some forewarnings. When we hit the floor with the real rounds, we are going to run and we aren't slowing down for anything, so you better be prepared to work like a boss to get your entries done in a timely manner. Judges, this includes you getting your results to me too - if you hold off too long (i.e. I don't have it at LEAST a half hour before the next round starts) I'll just publish whatever scores I received, since we need to keep this moving. I don't want to have to do this because it's rather rude, but this keeps the contest at reasonable length. You can judge entries as they come.

Absolutely everything you need to know, including future deadlines and the judging rubric, is on the site*, and for the record, it's perfectly fine to seek some feedback on your entries. This post will be updated with submissions as they come to keep things easier for the judges.

*Hosting has moved from the filebin as of June 3.

Winners might get badges. It really depends on a number of things; your enthusiasm and participation is the one factor you have control over. This contest can kick a lot of ass and mean something, but you have to make it happen too. If SMWC Idol slips into irrelevance, then I don't see why S.N.N. should be obligated to hand out badges for it. As for judges, there's free coffee in the break room. It kinda sucks, but what are you gonna do.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Sonic CD - Metallic Madness (Good Future) JP

And here is the original.

I've been wanting to port this one for a long time now. I guess this was my opportunity here lol. I also needed a break from DKC porting too.

The song uses an echo delay of $06 but does not crash in BSNES.
I think a post layout goes here somewhere...
Final Fantasy III/VI - The Day After
My submission.
The original.
[useless info]
Yep.
Here goes the song that I've always wanted to port:
Donkey Kong Country 3 - Pokey Pipes

It was a difficult one... certainly the hardest port I did ever.

Original version: Link
MK2TDS
What am I getting myself into...

Awesome - Asteroids

I couldn't find the song in its original form on YouTube (you try searching Awesome music and see what you come up with), but I did manage to find a gameplay video here. I also think this is the first song on SMWC to use pitch modulation (the little P icon in SPC700), which I used to give the distortion guitar a bit more power.

EDIT: Wrong link.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
I'm sure some of #imamusic expected it but...

Ahem.

I'd rather you click it before I tell you the name(more of a surprise for those who haven't heard it yet), but I'll edit it in if you need me to.

Original.

Yo, I ported 'Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 2' for this round of SMWCI3.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 2

This took me 2~3 days to port. I think this is by far the best unsampled port I made.

Have Fun!

Original
Wow. Talk about last-minute.

I am very pleased with my overall result. The pitch bends in this one murdered me, but I think I've done a pretty good job with them.

Chrono Trigger: Jurassic Dance.

This is, unfortunately, the only YouTube video of the original. It conveys the song well enough.
I'm cutting it really close with this submission, but I guess I made it.

La-MuLana - Curse of IRON PIPE

Original

My favorite song from my favorite game. I thought it would be fitting as my preliminary entry, since it's a port I've been meaning to finish for a long time.
I bet I'm like, 5 seconds too late with this close but oh well.

OH DANG NEVER MIND
Because the three of us got judging done in an ever so timely manner and I could organize the brackets already, I'm going to open Round 1 early. Clear your cache if the brackets in the OP are showing up blank, and refer to the Preliminary page for detailed commentary from the judges.

North Division:
S.N.N. vs Nameless
Buster Beetle vs. Kipernal
You guys get odd @instruments and @14 at your disposal. Port or compose anything. No loopholes.

South Division:
Kadyastar vs. omegazeroINFI
Lunar Wurmple vs. ThinkOneMoreTime
You guys get even @instruments and @17 at your disposal. Same drill otherwise.

Every entry is still due June 19 at 07:30 EST, the morning. Judging is due exactly 24 hours after, so I encourage you to judge as they come.

Earning the byeweek are:
Moose and Slash Man, North Division
Blind Devil and Masashi27, South Division
You guys will take this week off and fight the winners of round 1.

General Echidna, unfortunately, did not make the cut, but Friday was still a cool endeavor. You've earned your Brownie points. :>

e: I'll try to be less sloppy next round. Thanks Atma and S.N.N. for pointing out a lot of incorrect stuff.

*chop*

If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Here's my submission. It's a custom composition, so I obviously don't have a reference.

Badlands

2222 bytes.
The Beatles' "She Loves You" - 'Tropical' Remix

I guess I don't need to post any reference, since it's only a remix.

I'm terribly sorry if it turns out to be the worst Beatles remix ever I did my best
Star Shock
My submission! This is a custom song! I made a lot of effort to make it sound good! :)
^^
Yellow Fever.

This is a custom composition. If this passes the round, don't submit it to the music section, as it is likely going to be a level theme in SMWCP2.
