Castlevania: Mario Edition *Slight update*

Intro (tl;dr)

It's time to unveil my new (Slightly halloween themed) hack, Castlevania: Mario Edition.

Here's a brief intro to this future series.

-------------------

The 'Mario Edition Series'

This is an idea I had a while back, that i'm starting now. Basically the Mario Edition series are SNES platformers essentially ported into SMW. As a brief sumamry, you play through complete SNES game, with Mario's physics (With some adapted powerups/moves).

The first one I decided to do is Castlevania: Mario Edition. This is all the levels (In all their glory) from Castlevania: Dracula X 'ported' into SMW.

Other 'mario edition' games I've planned are Metroid, Megaman and DKC, but Castlevania is taking muuch longer than expected, so expect a short wait inbetween installments.

-------------------

Castlevania: Mario Edition

As mentioned, here you play through every level from Castlevania: Dracula X but as Mario. (This includes all of the branching paths). While this sounds boring, I have made strides to implement Castlevania style powerups/moves to enhance the feel and gameplay.

Implemented Changes

- Mario can no longer run, because if he could you'd probably blast through all of the levels in about 3 minutes.

- Mario can no longer jump on enemies.

- When collected, mario can use sub-weapons (Axe, cross boomerang, knife and pocket watch).

- Best of all, Mario can now wield the Vampire Killer whip by way of a main attack (to replace jumping on foes). This is incomplete, but I am able to show you an extremely buggy beta version.

- Some sprites have been implemented, which I will explain below.

-Every Castlevania: Dracula x tune will be ported, complete with samples. (I've only done about 3 so far).

- The status bar from Castlevania: Dracula X has been implemented, complete with heart counter and health bar. (Incomplete, see screenshots)

- In-progress Titlescreen

Future Changes

- Implement Layer 3 effects and HDMA (See screenshots)

- Complete sprites

- Fisnish porting soundtrack

- Perfect the whip attack, as right now it's buggy.

- Finish Titlescreen

- Complete world map (ongoing)

-------------------

Screenshots

There aren't many atm, because i'm still porting the vast tilesets.

The screenshots on the left are taken from the original game, and those on the right are from my hack for comparison.

Videos

A first glance...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/T8K0b10dgwY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/T8K0b10dgwY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

- The music is not perfect, i know that. (For one thing, there's no Castlevania samples yet. This is because whenever I use the sample tool thing it glitches up all of my ExGFX).

- The whip is kinda crappy (But it works, slightly).

- Still no HDMA or layer 3 or anything

Comments are much appreciated.

Ooh, that looks awesome. Can't wait to play this in its finished version.
That's pretty damn awesome.
Cool when you finsh this one I wonder what you will make next

(super mario kart world :P)
...Wow, that looks damn impressive.
I really like the "Mario Edition" idea, having a game replicated in SMW sounds really cool, espacially if it is that well made.
Just one thing, the text is really hard to see in the title screen.
The rest is really awesome, espacially the status bar, it looks really colourful and nice, yet serious and matches the rest of the graphics.
Keep it up!

Anyways, it sounds like an awesome idea to replicate other games in SMW. Can't wait for it to be finished.

(Sonic the Hedgehog: Mario Edition. XD)
Good fucking bye.
Thanks everyone for comments.

The titlescreen text i'm aware of... I need to change the palette of all the text in fact.

As for future games, Sonic isn't a SNES game, and so would be difficult to replicate exactly, but we'll see how it goes. (Loop-the-loops would be impossible in SMW without lots of ASM knowledge I expect).

more screenshots coming soooon

*Edit* Probably worth mentioning here that I am still working on Star Quest (My other hack), but it's on a bit of a hiatus before I release Demo 1. I'm just fixing stuff up atm.
This is an awesome idea!

Ripping those GFX certainly takes some time, but making the sprites and porting the music w/h samples? Pretty sweet. I rather enjoyed the challenging difficulty in this game. However, to make the game slightly easier you SHOULD allow Mario to jump on enemies - If some little kid downloaded this hack and found out he couldn't jump on enemies he would be like wtf. Just my opinion, either way this is an awesome idea for a hack.

I'm really excited for the ported soundtrack and the Mario-styled status bar looks very well done!

Thanks, I hope not to dissapoint.

And making Mario jump on enemies... it depends on what enemies I have in the game really. I mean Mario has the whip which can kill most enemies in 1 hit, so jumping might not be necassary...
Judging from the screenshots you provided, this looks really good. Looking forward to it.

I was really just joking around, but it would still be interesting to see it somehow replicated in SMW anyways. Also, I didn't see the part about the series being specifically SNES games until just a moment ago, so whatever. :P

I'm fairly sure i would be possible though, just slightly out of my league.

---------------------------

Not i'm going to talk to you about sprites.

I have 2 sprites made at the moment, and unnfortunately they are currently only null sprites.

- Firstly there's the candle. This can be seen in a number of my screenshots. When you hit it with the whip it bursts into flame just like in the game, but at the moment it doesn't give you anything (hearts, health, powerups, etc).
This sprite is 8x16 pixles in size.

- Secondly, there's the Skeleton Ape.
This guy's only in one screenshot (The second one after the title screen. He's on the far left, just in shot). Again, this guy's only a null but he can be killed by the whip. He's a lot bigger; he's 32x48 pixels in size.

---------------------------

My concern is that the sprites will never be anything more than null sprites for the simple reason that i simply don't have the map16 space. As i use the VRAM rearrangement patch, the BG and FG eat into sprite space literally leaving me with like 2 spare tiles.

We'll see what happens in the future.

Oh ho! I see what you mean. I guess I should have looked here before I made my comment in the screenshot thread...

All the stuff you are implementing is going to take a lot of work. I commend you on you dedication to make this hack awesome. Looking at the screenshots, it looks almost EXACTLY like the original game.

Really great work.

I'd be cool to see DKC: Mario Edition. I'm not a big fan of Castlevania, but this is still great.

Wow! This is sure something! The graphics is amazing, the intro-screen is amsing, the statusbar is amazing etc. You should maybe try to use HDMA, it could turn out even cooler I think.

Looking forward to more pictures! Keep it up:)
Sonic - Mario Edition
Ayway, this looks cool, im just not fond with castlevainia.
What do people have against Castlevania!?? :0

But yes, I'm trying to elarn HDMA. i tried (And failed totalyl) to sue teh design kit in the tools section, and I've since given up slightly. I'll try and get back to it though

Wow, this is really impressive, I'm a huge fan of Castlevania and I've been wondering myself why there has been a lack of C Vania related content in the Mario Hacking community. Here's some holy water to you for good luck, keep it up, really great stuff. Also your ideas for other Mario editions related to various gaming series is marvelous. The implementation of everything you've shown so far is excellent. I played through Castlevania Rebirth on Halloween, figured a perfect game for the Halloween night, great game. Going through all the SNES Castlevanias again now so X is on the list. Can't praise this enough can't wait to see more haha, porting music, custom sprites, Castlevania BGS and FGS oh my! I wonder how many various Castlevania enemies will make an appearance...bosses as well. Well clearly...I'm excited...certainly a supporter, may Dracula's Curse never come your way!
OMG, this is awesome, i good hack, and if you make it, you can go to featured hacks

Need help with your Hack?
I'll be happy to help you with you Status Bar, anything.

Well. Hunh.

I don't really think that the Mario sprite really fits the Castlevania graphics style, but what the hell do I know? It's clear you have put blood, sweat, and tears into making this, and for that, I commend you. However, Just copying straight Castlevania levels won't make for an interesting hack honestly. :/

My advice is to Go with it if you want, but don't expect any HUGE eulogies or ecomiums, since people tend to look down on remaking things solely (Ex: Super Mario Bros. 2 Dexluxe)

great stuff, i'm a big fan of castlevania
(my layout doesn't say that in this moment, i have TOS :()
anyways, you already ported Opposing Bloodlines (stage 1 song)?
if so, i want to hear it!.
i hope you finish this.
I do pixels sometimes
