General Discussion (over)

I'm gonna be making like a underground level in the form of a little maze/puzzle.
I'm not the star of the show but I try to be.
Currently making a SMW rom hack with 7 worlds. Hope to finish it soon.

Hey Samus, how about you let people sign up for the exgfx space? Like levels, have people sign up for spots until they run out. That way, there isn't too much confusion.
Hmmm... This seems interesting... I guess I'll make a level...

Although, I don't use IRC, so I really don't know much about the plot and whatnot...

QUESTION: What will we do when we finish our level(s)? How do we "upload" them? To the File Bin, and the host patches the IPS to the ROM?

QUESTION 2: What levels can we make? Y'know, since people will be making/editing different level numbers (i.e. 105, C2, 1F6, etc.), the different patches would just overwrite the levels modded by the other people. Maybe everyone should post and say which level they are editing?

If you really need to go to IRC to understand all this, then I might not be able to do it...

Yeah, I don't use IRC either. I think the best thing is to start with level 1, and have people get assigned level numbers, and a limit of other levels there's leads to.

It's for reasons like this (ie level number picking confusion) that I once again request that no one start trying to make levels until the signups are posted. Once they are posted you specifically will choose what level numbers you want to use.
I like this hack because I completely suck at making graphic that are very different from SMW graphics. So I am going to sign up
:)
I just want to suggest a couple of things:

1)Are we going to make more than one collabration hack? (I think we should, if this works out really well), and if we do, we should number them with roman numerals, because they look cooler.

2) What are we going to call the hack? I dont think it should just be "An SMWC production", thats a bit too bland. Like the VIP series, it's "Super Mario World: VIP and Wall mix". We gotta name it something interesting.

Yeah, sorry if i'm a bit ahead here. Also, can i design a submap or something? I think i'm pretty good at overworlds.

This may be a stupid question, but were not gonna put EVERYONE's levels in here, right? Like if someone makes a horrible level, it wont be in there? Theres gonna be expectations and such, right?

Well, levels obviously have to follow the hack submissions guidelines, but I'm not sure about if someone makes a boring level that doesn't break any rules.

Every level should be up for creative criticism before inclusion.

1. Not sure at this point, plus, the first one doesn't have to be given a number. You don't see the first movies in a series with 1's next to them.
2. We'll discuss names for the hack later, probably once the level design is steadily underway.
3. MatthewPZC/pikaguy900/Sonic is designing the whole overworld. I'd rather have one person do it so the style of design remains consistent.
4. There will be quality control for levels, don't worry. How exactly it will work is something not planned yet.
I'm thinking about participating in this. I could make some level designs and stuff like that. I don't know... I just want to be in the project to help out the community.

Music choice is up to level makers. but, with that in mind, should they only be able to chooseup to 2 songs per level? We don't want 100 levels using 10 songs each afterall, that'd even blow up Romi's addmusic.

As well as filesize, 2 8kb songs could be dangerous and cramp the rest of the music insertion.
I made a standalone game once, look for Seabug Stampede on Google Play.

Signups haven't started yet...

I don't think you guys understand exactly how this hack will work. It's not a "team hack" where people sign up for various parts of the hack, instead, it's a VIP-style collaboration. People will sign up to create levels without any true restrictions other than matching the world theme. Graphics and ASM hacks will be added on a designer-by-designer basis. I'll get more into exactly how this all will work when it comes close to the time for level signups.

Correct. Signups haven't begun yet. Don't worry, you'll know when they have.
Ok , i have a couple more questions:

What tools are we going to use? BTSD/Spritetool/ect

Is there anything we are going to need to install BEFORE making levels (Such as HDMA and custom music)

Are we going to have screen scrolling pipes?

I ask these because, in my opinion, it would be a good idea to figure out before starting to make levels.

We are going to have to be VERY careful with map16 usage. I encourage everyone to use tilesets that don't need lots of map16 or find ones that work over the original sets. Better yet, I encourage people to make vanilla levels as well since there's a lot of creativity that can be found in vanilla hacking still and map16 wouldn't be as much of a worry.

So does that mean that we can still make simple map16 changes, like a left-facing lava wall or an upside down muncher?

Page 3 has half the page devoted to vertical and horizontal pipes (exit-enabled and normal) on each of the 8 palette rows. It will also be used for common map16 tiles like you suggested, such as multicolor cement blocks and more.
