ExGFX Contest 2017 - Results

Results

It has been a long time coming, and I know you have all been awaiting, especially the participants. Thank you for you patience, we always like to discuss these things so that we can make sure, as the judges that have been trusted with critiquing your work, that we do it as fairly and as unbiased as possible. That being said, I would like to post the results of the ExGFX Contest 2017, Winter Version.

So, this year, we had two categories: Foreground and Background; we had Fifteen participants for the Foreground category, and we had Five participants in the Background category. (Background judging was pretty easy...)

So, for Third Place in the Foreground category, we have...
Katrina
They made a wonderful tile set filled with a lot of different aspects. I think it's fair to say we all loved it.

In Second Place, we present to you...
Miku
Miku's tile set is a very beautiful work of art, really liking the vibes I get from this set. It has a lot going for it, especially all the character it has. One would be crazy not to find appeal somewhere in this.

Alas, in First Place, we judges of the 2017 contest would like to give you...
PercentN
His approach to the winter theme was very different, and very appropriate. I personally was hoping they'd win first place due to how different and inspiring his tile set was; where was the hot cocoa my friend? You my friend, got that Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Rank #1!

It took an hour or two of discussion as to who would get first place, because both PercentN and Miku got the same score, as you can see below in the Judging Table I set up. However, I didn't feel good about handing out two first places, so we came to the conclusion that PercentN gets the win if only because Magi and I liked his set better. That being said, the good doctor parasite liked Miku's better. All in all, you're both winners. Actually, all three of you all. Congratulations you guys!

Splitting away from the Foreground, it's now time we give you our winners for the Background category.

In Third Place, we have:
PercentN
Hills with Candy. I thought it worked very well with his set, lots of synergy, and not really any empty spaces. Always something to look at, way to go my friend!

That's third place, who has come into Second Place? Well, I'll tell you, it is...
Ruberjig
His background has quite a lot going on. Mountains, very well drawn trees. Oh, and the Layer3 is absolutely incredible. Excellent work.

Now, for first place... I think everybody must have saw this one coming. It is...
Gloomy
His submission focused completely on the Background aspect, so really it's not a wonder he'd win this here. The image is so beautiful, atmospheric... calm. I love that part the most, it's calming to look at. Here's your win buddy, you deserve it. Now Idol, start handing out them trophies you admin you.

Of course, we would like to extend a hand to all of our participants. I believe you all get Participant badges.

To those who are interested, here are our judging tables. I suggest you have either Microsoft Office Excel or the free alternative to Microsoft Office, LibreOffice. Really,
if you do any sort of major writing, there's no reason for you not to have either of these bulk office programs installed on your computers...

And lastly, we have screenshots for everybody. First, our judging table which I used mathematical calculations to do the tallying for me.

Below are screenshots of all the entrants.
I can't believe I won
Congrats to the winners!
I actually sort of like manofer's (actually no sarcasm).

Congrats to the winners, although basically every single one of these looks great.

Can't believe my not-so-subtle Mega Man IV Crystal Man ripoff got such a decent score. There's some really great competition here!

I must apologize for being so harsh on the submissions compared to the other judges, but I hope the extent of my comments are enough to make up for it and justify my scores. I also urge all participants, especially the ones with lower scores, to read everyone's comments on all entries!

With that said, I have to congratulate the winners, their victory was very well deserved and I'm glad we have artists this good in our community #smrpg{y}.

If you feel my judging was unfair for one reason or another (or if I was unclear at some point), feel free to ask me and I'll try (try) to clarify myself.

Congrats to the winners! Those are some sexy drawings I'm not jealous you are 👀

Yes, same with me. Please do not feel afraid to approach us or ask questions regarding as to why the scores came as they are.
Not gonna lie, this was one of the hardest things I've ever done in SMW hacking. I can't even tell how much time I've spent looking for reference pictures and staring at them to learn all of the physical details required. ...But it was all worth it. Full view of my BG for convenience.

I had more plans for my entry but technicalities and reduced time due to university and holidays prevented me from doing more and polishing the remaining rough edges. Gladly, what I got in the end was good enough. Thanks, judges! #smrpg{<3}

Also congrats to the other winners!

it's okay, I completely understand. While proclaiming that i have sex with dogs felt a bit unnecessary, your primary criticisms regarding my lack of detail and sloppy line work were tough but important

e: cognrats to all the winners, however; your graphics are very pretty and a welcome contribution to the site #smrpg{y}
ask me if i give a f*ck...
Woo~ Congrats to all the winnners! I honestly didn't know who was gunna win. There were a lot of good entries.

Miku's especially caught my eye. Being able to create great looking, smooth pixel art without using 1000000 colors is something I need to work on and their FG is a great example of that. Sorta reminds me of Kirby and i love it.

@Gloomy I saw your BG and wondered how much time it must have taken to make it and then you mentioned all the research you had to do in Discord. P good stuff #smw{:TUP:}

But oof. That missing tile almost cost me first place monkaS
I agree that my icing didn't really have enough contrast tho. I guess I wanted the icing to not really be purple but idk what the point of that was lel

I'm not good with drawings.
Well, congratulations to the winners!

You can always practice to improve your techniques.

Anyways as for me, Skewer's opinion accurately reflects my own thoughts on the set, as I do agree I could have done more but um, my development of December Darkness is why I have so limited time to make this set (as in, doing it last minute).
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

You're right, I need to practice more.
LUL there was a background supposed to be in mine, I organized it terribly though

Edit: though it is in the level file
PercentN's entry is just

Congrats to the winners!
