Finding a ROM

Hi,

There may be a getting started portion of this site that this would be better suited for, if so, feel free to move it. I'm interested in learning how to program, though, and I thought making an SMW hack would be a fun and easy place to start. Plus, I'm an SMW fan, from the games to the animated series. I think Super Mario Maker might be fun, but you can't create a full game. I wanted to experiment with hacks to create a full game.

I'm a little concerned about where and how to find and download a legal ROM, though. Technically, downloading ROMs is against the law and hacking games is violation of copyright. I really am only worried about illegal downloading and maybe viruses, though. The rest would probably only hurt if I say reverse engineered a game and tried to sell it, and that of course is not my goal. I just want to hack a Mario game and tell a fun story in the process.
I'm sorry, but due to the limits of SMWC, nobody can link you to one.

I recommend sites that look trustworthy and their downloads reflect that as well. If you download an .exe, just don't run it. I'd say that the best thing to search is "Super Mario World [!] USA ROM"
please click this!

(U) or [!] mean nothing now. [!] used to mean it was clean but after bad dumps came up with [!] in it it's no longer good. Simply look up Super Msrio World Clean ROM or something similar and you should be fine.

As for your request, as I said, look it up as we can't send ROMs.

The cheapest, easiest, legal solution is buy a snes classic and dump the rom. A bonus to this is you support Nintendo.

Do you know if I could get one from paying for and downloading one of their virtual consoles? They have one for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.

Again, the reason I'm not just going out and getting a Super Mario Maker game is that it's features are limited. I wouldn't have as much luck exploring how platforming games of this kind work, and if I wanted to change everything around, like give Mario a new story line, new friends and enemies, custom power-up's, new maps, and better graphics, Mario Maker would probably not allow me to do all of that.
I don't know how to get a dump from VC*, but in the time it takes you to google that, you could also just google the ROM.

*but I kind of doubt that it would be useful, since you wouldn't end up getting a SNES ROM, you'd end up getting a, say, Wii ISO of an emulation of a SNES ROM.

Google has DMCA by Search engine.

As again. We're not tolerate to search ROMS from another site.
If recommend to search YouTube http://YouTube.com

Nope. Nintendo employees search ("x" game ROM) and see if the download is an SFC/SMC. If you mean getting DMCA'd by

Again wrong. Youtube is for things like videos, in fact, you will find very little things pertaining to ROMs there, and it's the last place to search.
I can barely read JonKaruzu's post so none of this holds any ground.

I'm going to pretend that makes sense...
yes you can extract a rom from virtual console, but it's not as easy.

I'm saying that if you had a way to just take the file off of the Wii, it would result in a file for use with the Wii. Not a SNES ROM, which would have to be extracted using for instance the method you linked. So... I don't understand how what I said was so out there that you have to be dismissive about it, since it seems to be exactly the same as what you said.

Just because something's illegal doesn't mean it's bad, remember. The site can't condone ROM links solely because it wants to avoid liability, not to promote absurd copyright law.

Go copy that floppy. Err, download that ROM. From google.
"Wii ISO of an emulation of a SNES ROM." Doesn't make sense, and would be down right confusing. An ISO is an image of a CD. What you might have ment is you'll end up with a .wad file. Which is a similar idea. It contains a emulator, rom, sav file, and asave state.
Like Kaijyuu said, please just use Google or DuckDuckGo.

Linking ROMs here is explicitly forbidden due to Nintendo being extremely anal towards piracy of their older games (despite using consumer-dumped ROMs themselves).
We don't want to get the site in trouble, sorry.

If you have trouble finding a clean ROM, PM me for help, assuming the mods don't mind.

What do you mean what? It's preety simple. Dude wants a legal rom, the snes classic has what he wants and it's the simplest way to get a dump of it...
It's a good question really, you're gonna see more and more people wanting to obtain Roms legally in the future.
Nobody cares about obtaining ROMs the legal way because it's infinitely more time-consuming than just going on Google and downloading one off of a ROM website, especially since there's absolutely no consequence to downloading a ROM, like, ever.
