Super Wakana Land - Hack is ready for C3, final testing needed

I think the palette is much better for Wakana, it is more vibrant to the colors of the hack.

The screenshot looks pretty nice, I like the HDMA going on there, is it possible to slow the speed down a little bit though?

This hack isn't dead yet! After I figured out how to fix a major bug, I felt like proceeding with its development.


First, thanks to those who pointed out that Wakana's face looks weird, I had Skewer find some solutions to it. After many tries, I chose my 4 favourites, showing in the screen below:



I ask you which of the 4 Wakanas up there is your favourite. The most picked one will be inserted.
Ah, and don't mind the palettes, Skewer used the old set.

Yes, I plan to actually add some SMWC users as bosses/helpers/etc. Right here, Dark Mario Bros. He will be a bonus boss that will unlock the level's secret exit.

Casting a vote for face #1. Also, for the OW border, it looks good, but I think you should change the color of the "Lives" text if you can because it blends into the background too easily right now.
I like number 1 and number 3.
Glad to see that this project isn't dead, it looked (and still looks) very promising.
I also like all the custom abilities you gave the player, but in it's current state the "fireball" seems to be a bit overpowered.
Maybe you should use more enemies, which can take more than one of the fireballs. Otherwise no complains about your newest level #tb{:]}

That level looks stunning, for the face, hmmmm... I'd say 1 since the perspective makes more sense and the face is more understandable than the others.

I'm leaning towards the second face, but #1 is also pretty good. The level looks pretty tricky as well, but I'm glad you are taking your testing the player with Wakana's abilities. That Map Boarder looks really good, BTW.

I'm cool with you using my character sprite from Daizo's Journey if you want to use more user characters somewhere as a helper or boss of some kind. Then again, I'm cool if you want to reject my offer.

Now that's interesting, using the moving ghost-house holes in this level... It's too bad most designers are bothered by the black space that makes up the sprite *cough*cutoff*cough* because there are many ways to apply it that aren't explored enough.

As for the face? Hmmmm, I think I would have to go with Face #2.

So, after a few decades, I'm back to work on this hack again. I have lots of stuff to show, and I'm counting on you people's feedback as always.
Let dem screens out.



Here we are. Featuring three levels right there.
The first one is a bridge-crossing level, right before the caves entrance on the Overworld. The design is still pretty basic, without a particular gimmick, but it's very tricky and athletic. The full level can be seen here in a biggy gif.
The second level is a cave level. Dark and spooky, it's a small pipes labyrinth, not too hard to pass. Here too, still a basic design overall, so that the player can get accustomed with Wakana's controls more.
The third level should be familiar if you played the C3 demo. Yeah, the first castle, now with a layer 3 replacement, from the SMW layer 3 windows to something that more fits with the castle style. Biggy credit to Skewer, he's the author of it.

Compared to the previous update, you can see (finally) Wakana with the most voted face, which is the #1. I'm very thankful to those who stated their preference on the poll.

We can also see some reskinned global tiles: the pipes (kindly made by Skewer again <3) and the "turn blocks", now brick blocks. The only thing left for the latter is the ASM code, I didn't find the SMB3 brick block code anywhere, so if someone has it, let me know and I'll hug you.

Lastly, the new ability: now Wakana can ground pound too! This is not too much of a "top kek 420 blaze it" ability, but it will allow you to break certain blocks from the top. You can see them in action in the .gif, if you didn't.

That's it so far! Don't forget that anything that looks like SMW is going to be replaced, so don't mind that flying wiggler too much. Any suggestions and feedback always warmly welcome! And yes, there is a screen where the hack crashes, so what?
Looking quite nice here ;D Not too much to say really, I like your pipes and you've done a good job at improving consistency. I guess if I had to say anything, it's a nitpick; in the last two screenshots the rock tiles seem repetitive.

Anyway, the hack is looking better and better, I was honestly surprised to hear Skewer did those pipes, they look so apart from his style of things. The amount of detail the levels seem to have is very nice in terms of looks and aesthetics, nice job. The whole fantasy style this hack seems to have is very intriguing indeed. I look forward to more of your work.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback and support cuties. As for that dark pic, the hack crashed there, and I included it as pic for no reason.

Sharing some visuals of the next level I'm building. Finally some graphical variety with this beach level:



Another simple in gimmick level, but this time, a bit more trickier than the previous ones. You also must avoid water at all costs, we angels don't like deep water too much.
You can also see I changed the status bar a bit, as well as the coin GFX. Now coins are energy orbs needed to fill Wakana's mana power. Now, each time you shoot, Wakana will use 5 MPs. Kind of penalizes the hack from the previous state, but since you can kill almost all the sprites with it, I think it's worth it. This, and much more stuff regarding MPs has been done, but at the moment, I won't tell else mnmnmnmnmnm.

As always, feedback welcome!
I'm liking this level because of its variety, it doesn't feel repetitive at all with all those elements you've got to build it.

The palettes are well made, they really participate into giving the level a beach feeling. The background is beautiful without being distracting, and the overall level design seems good.

I suggest that you add more flowers, though. Some of the screenies are lacking them (expected the latest because it's inside bleh).

This hack is very interesting and unique, I enjoyed the demo from last C3 and I'm looking forward to play another one!

I noticed a MP on the Status bar, looks like the Danmaku shoots will not be infinite, what makes the game more challenge, I really love those grapichs. I wonder how a flower can stand on sand lol
and I think that more flowers with others colors would be good, not only blue =w=

I mean, I get what you're going for, but it just seems to me it'd be kind of easy to confuse the player if the FG and BG look very much alike, even if the other is very dark.
