Try using custom palettes.
EDIT: Try merging GFX files and using Map16 as well.
I understand what you mean, Map16 and palettes are fun to play with and make your hack standout if you do it right - but let it be as it is if he wants it to be like Super Mario World.
e: superbot12 replied while I was rewording my post. Ah well.

Will it attempt to give a new look with the default graphics by messing with Map16/palettes?
This is a good example of what I mean. (It's mine hurrhurr)yes

That is a very good example but you probably shouldn't put FG in the BG, otherwise the player might think you can interact with it.

Exactly, which is why you change the palette (decreasing the saturation in the video example)
so it feels different to the player. That level I posted still needs some tweaking, but I think it's a nice example of using vanilla graphics to make a new looking level.yes

It still looked like you could go on it for me.
If the FG has a black outline and is darker than the BG, the BG having a light outline and being lighter, I think it's easy to tell what you can't and can interact with.
EDIT: IT's actually really easy to tell the difference, BTW.
Ok. So can we shut this thread down now?I support:

If you're not going to show any more progress then yeah.
Alright then.
