What's the scariest moment you've ever encountered in a Zelda or Mario game?

Seiously, I know Nintendo games aren't all that scary, but when are some times you were truly frightened in a Zelda or Mario game? Maybe a weird creepy boss or enemy or just something unsettling. I remember a room in Wind Waker: Tower of the Gods where there were two Armos Knights that I thought were just decoration. Then I made a chest appear and opened it and they came to life. I had no idea how to beat them. They were just chasing me around very quickly and I thought I would die.
I remember being real scared of Phanto back in the day. One reason I was reluctant to ever continue SMB2 (the SMAS version). I hated 1-3 because of the long vertical segment and having to item babysit the key. I did not think of dropping the key to make Phanto go away, just had to get away real fast. The Phanto statue in the BG with the glowing red eyes in the room with the key did not help at all.

well, i had a pretty frightening experience (only the first time i saw it though):

in the game paper mario for the nintendo 64, on chapter 3: boo's mansion and forever forest, there's this boo-ish ghost character that appears behind mario. he talks normally, but when he's done with his short dialogue, he scares mario (his face turns evil and huge) and forces him to visit him or else he will face the consequences. that scared the living heck out of me when his face just turned huge! #smw{x_x}
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
I didn't remember so much but

And now, many people get scared at it: In SM64 in the level "Big Boo's Haunt" there is room in the ground floor with a piano. However, if you have ever played SM64 and was in this you room you know what I mean: THE PIANO LIVES! I never would go in this room or make a large bend on the piano except for the one red coin. Now I wouldn't be afraid on it but I still do a large bend (because it's an invincible enemy).
In Ocarina of Time Master Quest there was a room in the Spirit Temple that had EIGHT Skulltulas on the ceiling. Scared the shit out of me the first time I went in there!
The miniboss in Wind Waker's Earth Temple. It wasn't scary at first, but then my brother accidentally ejected the disc (he's clumsy like that). Cue a frantic rush to put it back in, with the game running the whole time.
Usually inactive/procrastinating on a hack idea.
Final hours in Majora's Mask. Hell, when i was a kid, i couldn't even play the third day because how scared i was of it. And when i got past that, i got this. . And for me as a kid, not knowing what to do, i ended up with the death sequence. I still remember the nightmares.
Later.
The god-damn Wallmasters and Ceilingmasters. I hate those things. I remember seeing that shadow appear for the first time and getting instantly frightened of their awful ability to bring you back to the opening of the dungeon.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, I was so scared of the Boos in the World 2 Fortress that I would not play that level ever again. Since I didn't know about either of the whistles in World 1, I was stuck there for quite a long time.

In Super Mario World, basically the same thing happened with the Big Boo at the Vanilla Ghost House. I didn't know where the red switch was, and I didn't know about the Star World, so that was where I stopped when I was younger.

This dear God! I even remember having nightmares about that Big Boo. Nowadays that ghost can suck it.

These things have been creeping me out ever since I played A Link to the Past in the early 1990s, and they got even creepier in Ocarina of Time. I have not gotten over them. Anything that involves getting eaten by a big fish in Mario games makes me cringe. Also, Phanto in SMB2 -- I was afraid of picking up a key and instantly threw it each time I'd have to grab it. Layer 2 smash with the spike pillars in SMW's Valley Fortress and Wendy's Castle used to scare me because they got so fast and killed you instantly if you went under them, and I would avoid the room in Bowser's castle that had them completely.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Though not big scares, Super Paper Mario has a good few unsettling moments that I remember well.

1. Particularly in the late to end game, when the void spreads across almost the entire sky in all the worlds. It gave me a serious feeling of alarm, like "I need to finish the game right now or else..."

2. There's also the few areas where, if you sit around long enough, a spooky creature called a Megabite appears (with a disturbing accompanying sound effect, no less) out of literally nowhere and attacks you. Pretty scary, even when you know it's coming...

3. But the big one, though not really an immediate scare but a lasting feeling of dread, has to be
returning to world six after it gets consumed by the void, leaving just vast emptiness. Not to mention the music playing there, seriously...

I'm probably retired tbh
In Super Mario World, I got scared of the thwomps, because the moment I less expected they would smash me and I wouldn't react fast, but as time passed I would get used to them. The layer 2 smash pillars didn't help either, as they are literally almost the same thing, and even my mom couldn't pass room 5 of Bowser's Castle (I could though, but I still got scared of these).

In YI, I also got scared of that frog boss that was in one of these castles, as well as the Frog Pirate. I almost couldn't get past the latter, as it swallowed me everytime I tried to get past it, but fortunately he got outsmarted.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
I used to be pretty scared of running into the Big Octos in Wind Waker.

Seriously, every time I noticed seagulls circling the boat I would start shitting my pants with terror.

Yeah, that Phanto was pretty scary. I remember throwing away the key as soon as I saw him too D: Anyway, I'll just list some of the creepiest moments I've ever had the opportunity to experience (in addition to the already mentioned ones):
- Redeads: I actually don't know what is creepier, their scream or their face. The place where you first encounter them made the entire thing even scarier.
- That possessed piano in Big Boo's Mansion (Super Mario 64). You walk relatively safely when...BAM! It starts yelling and running after you D: The whole level was pretty creepy though.
- The endless staircase (Super Mario 64). I was absolutely terrified by it when I was little; that's probably because I used to play on a 100% completed file, and I would have never expected something like that when I first started a new one :/ I'm still impressed by the Shepard tone used in that theme: repeating a scale through different octaves in a certain way gives an "endless" effect to the music, which never seems to end.
- Dead Hand (Ocarina of Time). Guess it speaks for itself.
- River Twygz Bed (Super Paper Mario). Probably one of the creepiest moments in the entire game; I remember there were some weird moving hands sticking out of the river's bed.
- The Music Box House in Ikana Canyon (Majora's Mask). Without spoiling anything, I honestly think it's one of the scariest, yet most moving scenes of the game. I particularly like how it tries to fool you with its happy music #ab{:P}
Skull Woods in A Link to the Past terrified me when I little, especially the Wallmasters. So much, in fact, that I skipped it and refused to play it until I got stuck and it was clear I needed the Fire Rod.

I guess this also gave birth to my favorite sequence break, namely completing Thieves' Town right after the Dark Palace in order to obtain Titan's Mitt and thus gain access to pretty much all of the Dark World, including the ability to obtain most of the optional items.
It seems that in my very young days, I had a fear of "petit creatures going giant". Yep, that's Yoshi's Island. But really that fear went down when I faced the bosses realizing how simple each one plays.
I also once feared Super Mario World's "Big Bubble" enemy from the Vanilla and Valley Ghost Houses because the were "unique" for a foe in tne mario series. They used to be the only ghost-type enemy that truely frightened me back in those days being the most mysterious. The unofficial Mario Monsters compendium suggests that these liquid spirits could put curses on those who see it.
Perfection is something that requires something that incompletes it. Perhaps it also breaks itself.

The only thing I recall freaking me out from any Mario or Zelda game was the bottom of the well in Ocarina of Time. The atmosphere was bone-chilling.

(An honorary mention goes out to the evil piano in Super Mario 64, though that was more of a one-time jump-scare than something that is legitimately creepy.)
You may think bad of me, but I'm scared of Ganonondorf's Phantom in Ocarina of Time. Him moving in the paintings (not so much the coming out) always freak me out a lot.

If I were to list everything, it'd take me 1337 hours, because I was quite the innocent type during my childhood. The most remarkable I can remember (which still give me a bit of the chills) are:

-
That hidden ghost in the Excess Express (that train in chapter 6, IIRC)
in Paper Mario TTYD. It wasn't only unexpected, but the guy also looks creepy as hell. His messages aren't the nicest and there's this somber SFX that plays when talking with him. #ab{:S}

-
Those Poe Sisters paintings in Forest Temple
in Zelda OoT. Not enough to be bone-chilling, but it was at least mind-f#cking to look at the empty paintings, then suddenly finding one with that ghost gazing directly at you. Approaching it would make it disappear and let that ghostly laugh behind, IIRC. Ugh.

- Redeads used to make me shit myself in my 1st playthrough when I was little. Watching them attaching to Link's body and slowly killing him isn't the best view to kids after all. I was kinda okay with them later, upon discovering the Sun's Song effect. However, in my 3rd playthrough I met this guy:

"ZOMG, what the F#CK IS THIS!?" was my reaction. I do find strange that I didn't remember this guy at all from my 2nd playthrough, since I reached Spirit Temple in this one. (Lost my save afterwards, unfortunately. I didn't make much progress in my 1st time, just to make it clear. The 3rd time was when I finally beat the game.) Tbh, these enemies are the most fearsome to me, not only because of their look or the SFX, but actually the inability to move, making the fight a bit more filled with despair.
