The Vanilla Tree - Vanilla Hack (Screenshots, Video and Demo)


Hi, People.
I'm just a german hacker who is active in SMW Hacking since 1 1/2 years and had never made something really awesome and is not sure if this will be accepted here on SMWC :P
I'm making the hack "The Vanilla Tree" that will be released in Novembder-Februrary 2013/2014 and will have about 14 exits (number can be changed).It's my first hack I'll complete. You'll get the vanilla feeling from the original SMW, but it's not completely Vanilla (It will have a custom boss, some custom GFX to prevent cutoff and some patches to stop getting 10 1-Ups by jumping on koopas while you're hanging on a vine :D etc. )
Well, first the story:
The red Yoshi got really sick. Usually there's no way to heal him, but there's a rare berry that can do this. It grows on the Vanilla Tree, named after the fruit that tastes like vanilla and is colored beige. But Bowser is planning to export the fruit in far lands for an expensive price! Mario must help the Yoshi and get the berry. He gets support by the green Yoshi.

Those Koopas were seen in Casatles, now they can be found in the forest...
This Level mixes puzzle levels with standard levels.
Every picture except the last one was from the first level.
Everything is not completely finished. There will be an english version and a german version that can be downloaded on smwhacking.de .
Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow I'll show more stuff, maybe even a demo :D
Last but not least I'm sorry if my english is too bad, but I hope you understand this, this is my first real english post on SMWC :P

The overworld looks quite good. The levels on the other hand, look very flat, it's generally not good to use long straight ledges of ground, add pits and slopes to your levels so they will be more interesting. Of course, I can't judge a whole hack based on screenshots, but that's just the impression I have for what you posted.

Levels: There are only normal levels.

Edit: You could use WYE's Message Box Expand patch (the hack isn't so vanilla, but Looks like more or less vanilla).

They can see themselves what is not so good, but I already said that the OW is not 100% finished (Or didn't I? #w{:s} )

Well, here in Germany it's 00:37 AM so the C3 is over, but on the clock here on SMWCentral is written it's 06:34 PM so I can still show you my Demo :)

Known problems are foe example the note block that creates an invisible block or that the 2nd sublevel of Level 1 is really flat, but of course I'll look for it :D

Yay, vanilla hack! :D I played it, and while it wasn't really big, I must say I really liked it.

The first level could get some polishing though: it has too many gimmicks for a level (moles, then vines and so on); what I personally reccomend is having only one gimmick per level, and develop it as you go through building the level. The second one is pretty consistent because it focuses on the autoscrolling gimmick.

About the OW: looks pretty decent. It's just the mountain to the right of the bridge that's too high (unless you're planning on making that bridge take to a cave under the mountain or something like that). Also, I'd not like it if you made that water level above the Yoshi's House take to that level in the mountain; the way Mario would climb such high land would look renundant.


Overall this looks like a nice start, so I'm looking forward to this! :)
